Attorney General Tom Clark has been advised by the House Judiciary Committee, which handles immigration bills, that he no longer need stay deportation proceedings on cases involving persons for whom private bills have been introduced in the House, It has been a courtesy practiced by the Justice Department for many years to refrain from deporting persons for whom bills have been introduced, pending Congressional action on those bills.

On Feb. 27, upon recommendation of the sub-committee on immigration, the Judiciary Committee approved a resolution to advise the Attorney General that he is no longer bound by the courtesy. Almost 400 private immigration bills have been introduced in the House this session by some 110 members. Opponents of the measure question whether all the members of the House can be bound by a resolution passed by one of its committees.
