Congressmen expressed certainty today that Lewis L. Strauss, just appointed Secretary of Commerce by President Eisenhower, will meet with no opposition in confirmation by the Senate. Until Congress reconvenes in January, Mr. Strauss will serve under a recess appointment.
Mr. Strauss is the first Jew to serve in the United States Cabinet since Henry Morgenthau Jr. was Secretary of the Treasury. He has been national co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and is a former president of Temple Emanu-El in New York. He was named to the Commerce post Friday to succeed Secretary Sinclair Weeks. Mr. Strauss served previously under the Eisenhower Administration as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
