The House Labor and Education Committee today approved sweeping legislation to set up a Federal Fair Employment Practices Commission. The measure, unanimously endorsed by all Committee members present at a closed-door session, would make it a crime for labor unions, private companies and Government agencies to discriminate in employment against anyone on the basis of “race, religion, national origin or age. “
The Committee’s bill, which will now go to the House floor where it faces a tough fight, would set up a five-member commission to be appointed by the President. The Commission would be empowered to seek Federal court orders to enforce its findings and also to seek penalties for violations through contempt proceedings.
