An official of the National Jewish Board suggested today at a Congressional hearing that the proposed National Service Corps should involve retired people as recruits.
The suggestion was made by Sanford Solender, executive vice-president of the JWB, who testified in support of Senate Bill 1321, which would set up the corps, popularly known as the “domestic peace corps.” He told the subcommittee that retired teachers, nurses and social workers “possess special skills which can be used with great value by the National Service Corps.”
Mr. Solender, immediate past president of the National Conference on Social Welfare, said that the need for the services the proposed corps would provide was great and that local communities, agencies and organizations would “benefit immeasurably by fully sharing in the development of local National Service Corps programs.”
