U.S. arms for Israel and reaffirmation of the Tripartite Pact of 1950 were urged by a study mission of three members of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in a report to Congress today.
Chairman Edna F. Kelly of New York, Thomas J. Dodd of Connecticut, and Wayne L. Hays of Ohio, all Democrats, suggested that the U. S. make available defensive arms for Israel to protect herself against the “offensive weapons” being sold at “ridiculously low prices” by the USSR to Egypt. The group said the Communists were “stirring up and encouraging the idea of destroying Israel.”
The Representatives noted that it the knowledge of the Soviet-Egyptian arms deal had been brought to the attention of Congress during consideration of the Foreign Aid bill, “action could have been taken to warn against the consummation of this deal.” The group revealed that “rumors” of the arms arrangement were received by the Department of State in late June or early July, but no report was given to Foreign Affairs Committee during the last session of Congress.
