Rep. Richard Schweiker, Pennsylvania Republican, citing a dangerous arms buildup of Arab states by the Soviet Union and France, urged that the United States Government immediately approve the sale of Phantom jet fighter-bombers to Israel. A member of the House armed services committee, Rep. Schweiker addressed a Jewish National Fund dinner here.

He said United States approval of such a transaction was “crucial” because France had cancelled contracts to provide Israel with jet planes. He condemned President de Gaulle of France for withholding planes from Israel and offering them to Iraq. He accused Gen. de Gaulle of anti-Semitism and malice toward Israel. He said de Gaulle’s conduct was producing “tragic consequences.”
