Secretary of State Dulles’ “fumbling, bumbling foreign policy in the Near East” may push us over the brink” of war, Rep. Wayne L. Hays, Democrat of Ohio, charged here tonight. This “muddling, bungling” policy may cost the United States the “friendship of our true friend and ally–Israel, ” the Congressman added.
He spoke at a banquet session of the Pioneer Women of America’s 15th biennial convention. Almost 1, 000 women from 490 clubs throughout this country and Canada attended.
“The sterility of the so-called Eisenhower Doctrine has been clearly demonstrated by recent events in the Near East” Rep. Hays asserted. He further charged that “Mr. Dulles’ hysterical rushing of arms to Jordan” had, in the words of Arab leaders, provided arms that “will never be used against other Arabs, but against the Arab’s blood enemy–Israel.”
Yesterday, the women’s clubs voted a special $100, 000 project to set up two training centers for Israel’s new immigrants. This move, in honor of Israel’s tenth anniversary, is in addition to the $2, 500, 000 voted for the organization’s educational, welfare and cultural program in Israel for 1958.
