President Johnson was urged today by a member of the House Agriculture Committee to sever further food shipments to Egypt. Rep. Paul Findley, Illinois Republican, said in a letter to the President that “in view of recent contemptible action and comments by President Nasser, I strongly urge that you halt further taxpayer-financed financial hand-outs to the Egyptian Government.”
“How can we hope to build our prestige and influence abroad if we continue to heap aid on those who spitefully use us, insult us, and help our enemies?” Rep. Findley asked. He asserted that “other ambitious Governments may conclude that the surest way to get hand-outs from the U.S. Treasury is to shoot down U.S. planes, arm cannibals, and tell the United States to go to hell.’
Rep. Findley said he was “shocked to learn that the United States Agriculture Department is going ahead with a wheat shipment worth $16,900,000 to Egypt.”
