The hunger, homelessness and destitution of Europe’s 1,400,000 Jewish survivors is a major issue which “the governments if the world must recognize as a primary factor in the foundation of a permanent peace,” Senator Alben W. Barkley, Majority Leader of the United States Senate, declared here today in addressing 350 Jewish leaders meeting at the Hotel Taft for the extra-ordinary Connecticut State Conference of the United Jewish Appeal.
The 350 delegates pledged 32 communities throughout the state to raise 3,200,000 toward the record $100,000,000 nationwide goal of the United Jewish Appeal, there who addressed the conference included Major Alfred Fleishman of St. Louis, recently returned to this country following an extensive survey of living conditions in the displaced persons camps of Germany and Austria; Captain Gamzon of Paris, leader of the Jewish Resistance Movement of France; George Alpert, noted Boston attorney; Samuel Slotwinik, president of the New Haven Jewish Welfare Fund; Judge Samuel Mellitz of Bridgeport; Bernard P. Kopkind, chairman of the 1946 campaign of the New Haven Jewish Welfare Fund; Louis Sachs, president of the New Haven Jewish Community Council; and Chaplain Hershel Schacter.
