The convention of the United Synagogue of America, central., body of Conservative congregations, today approved a revision in its standards for synagogue practice, calling for the broadening of the committee on Jewish law and standards of the Rabbinical Assembly of America–Central Rabbinical body of Conservative Judaism–to include equal representation for the United Synagogue of America, the Conservative movement’s congregational body.
It took its decision at its biennial convention here. Both organizations are sister groups within the Conservative movement embracing about 1,500,000 Jews in the United States and Canada.
Under the approved revision, the composition of the committee on Jewish law and standards will, in the future, be determined by the presidents of the United Synagogue and the Rabbinical Assembly “in consultation with each other.”
The committee on Jewish law and standards is the recognized authority of the Conservative movement in matters of Jewish law and religious practices.
