Jews throughout the world, especially women, were called upon here today to employ Jewish teachings and commitment as “a backlash of Jewish idealism and spiritual values” in the fight against “a mixed-up, hedonistic society.”
The call was issued by Mrs. Albert Fried, of Brooklyn, as she delivered the presidential keynote address at the opening session of the five-day convention of the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America. The League, composed of 200,000 women affiliated with the Conservative movement, opened its parley here at the Concord Hotel, with 1,700 delegates attending.
“Synagogue women,” said Mrs. Fried, “are fully aware of the enormous challenges which are ours in today’s secular society. It will be the family and the home that will help rear a generation of men and women that will give meaning and purpose to life.”
Messages were received by the convention from President Johnson and from Israel’s President Zalman Shazar. President Johnson stated: “Generosity of heart and conscience of soul mark the good work of the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America. The Sabbath candles your members kindle in Jewish homes give much light to the world.”
