A move to outlaw all forms of gambling and games of chance under the auspices of synagogues or synagogue-affiliated groups has been taken by the Philadelphia branch of the United Synagogue of America.
In a letter to the presidents of all congregations affiliated with the organization, Milton Nevins, its president, pointed out that “the honor of the synagogue is the responsibility of the religious forces of the Jewish community. Gambling or games of chance on the premises of the synagogue or for its benefit by the congregation or its affiliates destroys the synagogue’s dignity and respect. There have been very disturbing reports of such activities during the past year.”
