Two top leaders of the Constitution Party have resigned from the party in protest against anti-Semitic principles adopted by members of the National Committee of the group here. The two are: Percy L. Greaves Jr., chairman of the party, and Mrs. Suzanne Stevenson, co-chairman.
A statement issued by Mrs. Stevenson said: “The principles of the party as rewritten by an unauthorized meeting of a few of the National Committee in Philadelphia last week contain the phrase. “We must preserve our Christian heritage which has been the strength of this nation. Such a declaration sounds to me like anti-Semitism. I will have no part of any movement which seems to me to be so steeped in bigotry.”
Mrs. Stevenson denied that her resignation was due to an announcement made here by Upton Close, known for his anti-Jewish sentiments, who said he was speaking for the Constitution Party and declared that the party would seek to persuade members of the electoral college to vote for Gen. Douglas MacArthur for President of the United States.
