Construction has begun on the American School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, it was announced here yesterday by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, sponsor of the graduate school in Jerusalem.
Reporting to the HUC-JIR board of governors, Dr. Glueck noted that “religious and political extremists” had unsuccessfully attempted to deny a building permit for the school because the library would be used for Reform services for students. The debate in Israel over the school, he added, had demonstrated the “thoroughly democratic character of the Jewish State.”
