Continued Suffering of European Jews Make Urgent Redemption of Pledges

David A. Brown Makes Plea for Payment of Outstanding Pledges

The misery and suffering that still prevail in all parts of Europe and Russia make the redemption of the pledges made by American Jews to the United Jewish Campaign to relieve the situation an urgent responsibility, it is stressed in the appeal issued by David A. Brown outlining the Joint distribution Committee’s commitments to complete the 1928 program.

“During the entire summer we have been working feverishly on collections throughout the country in the hope that we would receive sufficient funds to meet our monthly budget requirements for Europe,” Mr. Brewn stated.

“Our Minimum requirements to Oct. 1 were approximately $3,000,000, while the total of our receptionist up to Sept. 12 were $1,454,888, a fraction less than half.

“We will need before the end of this yeas approximately $3,500,00. We have still outstanding in the form of pledges seven to eight millions of dollars. There should be no great problem involved in securing the amount required proving, of course, that those whose responsibility it is, will assume it and carry on the work of collection in an aggressive manner.

“The days of depression are over. We are about to enter era of prosperity such as this country has not had for many years. Many who have used the excuse of bad business, hard times, and therefore have failed o pay their pledges, should be prevailed upon now that times are better and are going to be still better, to meet all past and present obligations.

“It is not my intention to stress the situation in Europe. I have done this time and time again. No words of mine can being to paint the picture of the misery and suffering that still prevail in all part of Europe and Russia.

“A gain let me urge you to reassemble your forces so that the outstanding funds can be collated and put into action for the purpose for which they were pledged.”
