The Rabbinical Assembly of America, central body of the Conservative rabbinate, was urged here today by its president, Rabbi Eli A. Bohnen, to support state aid for the secular portion of religious and day school education but not for the religious part of it. Speaking at the opening session of the 67th annual convention of the Assembly, Rabbi Bohnen reaffirmed the organization’s position on separation of church and state.
Rabbi Bohnen praised President Johnson for his pledge to maintain the integrity of the states in the Middle East, and called on the U.S. Government to remain firm in the face of Egyptian and Syrian aims to destroy Israel. The praise of President Johnson and the reaffirmation of support for Israel during the present crisis were endorsed unanimously by the 500 delegates attending the convention.
