The biennial convention of the United Synagogue of America national body of the Conservative religious movement, closed here today with the adoption of resolutions opposing the McCarran-Walter Act and expressing support of Israel’s demand for defensive weapons from the United States and for guarantees of her territorial integrity. Charles Rosengarten of Waterbury, Conn., was re-elected national president of the organization which represents 585 Conservative congregations.
A Code of Synagogue Practice, which would ban bingo and other games of chance as fund-raising devices in Conservative synagogues and would extend rabbinical supervision to such events as weddings or funerals held off synagogue premises, was adopted last night at the convention.
The convention approved the code in principle, but left the final drafting of it to the incoming national executive council. The code would be enforced by the executive council, which is empowered to hold hearings or otherwise investigate alleged violations of synagogal dignity. The national council is also empowered to take whatever action it considers appropriate in dealing with violations.
