A resolution calling on the State Department to Intervene in behalf of Seven Hungarian Zionist leaders sentenced to prison terns yesterday in Budapest on charges of aiding “illegal emigration” of Jews from Hungary to Israel was adopted today at the 40th annual convention of Bnai Zion, fraternal Zionist Organization of America. The resolution condemned the action of the Hungarian Government, describing the convictions as “persecution of Zionists as Zionists.”
In another resolution the 500 delegates attending the convention urged the U.S. Government to aid in the initiation of direct Israeli-Arab peace talks. The State Department was also asked to support the Israeli Governments position of not considering any territorial changes in the present peace negotiations. The Bnai Zion convention, which will continue through tomorrow, extended greetings to President Truman and voiced Its thanks to the President for his continued support of the new state.
Principal speakers at today’s sessions included Rep. Emanuel Celler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee; Judge Morris Rothenberg, a national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal and acting national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal; Dr. Israel Goldstein, treasurer of the Jewish Agency who just arrived here from Jerusalem; and Louis Lipsky, veteran Zionist leader, Last night, Harry A. Pine, president of the organization. In a message to the convention, urged American Jewish youth to “go East” and “come to the aid of the young republic of Israel by volunteering for technical service” in Israel.
