As American and Israeli dignitaries looked on, the cornerstone for an American student center at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was laid at an academic convocation today. The $400,000 building will serve as a dormitory and recreation-study center for students from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America spending a required year of study in Israel.
Premier David Ben Gurion told the gathering that no rabbi or teacher can faithfully fulfill his task unless he stays at least a year in Israel. He witnessed the conferring of an honorary Doctorate of Laws on Maryland Governor Theodore McKeldin. Gov. McKeldin is also president of the America-Israel Society which contributed the $400,000 for the construction of the dormitory. Also honored; with a Doctorate of Hebrew Letters, was Zalman Shazar, member of the Jewish Agency executive.
