The support of millions of Americans for the people of Israel and for the Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, was pledged here last night by Walter Reuther, president of the United Automobile Workers of America, at a cornerstone-laying ceremony of a youth center in Holon which will bear his name.
Mr. Reuther, who arrived here earlier in the day, said that Israel and the Histadrut are, in the eyes of the free world, an example of what could be achieved by a people motivated by the will for peace.
The U.S. labor leader said that the overwhelming majority of the American people were favorably disposed towards Israel and that the American Government reflected this feeling. Mr. Reuther, who earlier in the day had a two-hour talk with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, declined to comment on the discussion or to reveal the subject except to say that “it was of common interest.”
