The cornerstone was laid today for a new museum in Dagania bearing the name of Aaron David Gordon, exponent of “the religion of labor.”
The new museum, devoted to natural history and agriculture, will honor the memory of one of the most colorful characters in the upbuilding of the new Palestine. Frequently referred to as the “Jewish Tolstoi,” Gordon left his home and family in Russia when already in his fifties and came to Palestine to be a “chalutz.”
Scorning the ministrations of his friends, Gordon went from commune to commune in Palestine, doing the hardest labors and serving as an example to his much younger comrades by the simplicity of his life and the devotion he bore to Zionism.
Gordon wrote several volumes of essays in Hebrew, devoted mainly to his belief that only physical labor on the soil can ennoble the human being. He died at Dagania in 1922.
