Two cost increases that will affect many families in Israel were announced here today. High school tuition fees, one announcement stated, will be increased by 20 percent. At the same time, the Association of Health Insurance Companies announced a 20 percent increase in the cost of its policies.
The tuition rise will affect the children of Israelis attending the secondary schools, although many Israeli youngsters receive scholarships based both on their scholastic ability and on the financial situation of their parents. In spite of such scholarships, however, the majority of high school students pay at least part of their total tuition.
In regard to health insurance, that increase will affect particularly the middle class, many of its members being covered by private firms offering a “Blue Cross” type of insurance. About half of Israel’s population is covered by health insurance offered by Histadrut, the Israel federation of labor. No increase in the cost of Histadrut health insurance has, as yet, been announced.
