Creation of new materials for Jewish religious education” free of Israeli nationalist overtones” will be undertaken by the American Council for Judaism through the expansion and reorganization of the Council’s Department of Religious Education and Activities, it was announced today by Leasing J. Rosenwald, Council president.
The new materials will consist of textbooks, audio-visual aids, curricula, teacher guides, and possibly a special fortnightly magazine prepared for children of religious school age. “The Council’s program of religious education free of the trappings of Israeli nationalism was undertaken in response to requests from parents all over the country,? the announcement said. “These parents called attention to the Zionist orientation of Jewish religious education in many existing schools. The Council began with an analysis of the textbooks in use in these schools. Most of these were found to be strongly slanted in favor of Zionism. “
