The executive committee of the National Council of Jewish Women today expressed opposition to the cuts in Federal funds for welfare and educational services proposed in President Eisenhower’s budget. The Council has 110,000 members in 240 cities.
In a statement adopted at the opening of its three-day meeting here the Committee asserted that “the inadequacy of educational and welfare services throughout America today represents a danger to our national security, right in our own back yards. The total effectiveness of our country as a world power can only be as great as the ability of our people to contribute their highest skills and talents to sustained progress.”
“This is no time to cut down services,” the women’s leaders urged. “We must, instead, do everything we can to strengthen our educational system, our people’s health and their ability to be self-sustaining, contributing members of society. Otherwise,” they warned, “in pouring money into weapons development, we will be catching up with the past, but losing the future.”
