some personality, wholesome psychologically and spiritually. Land enables the Jew in Palestine to be redeemed from the roll of ‘luftmensch, to which he has been condemned in other lands by the exigencies of his abnormal middle-class position. For the Jew to feel at home on the land is one of the most important desiderate in the functioning of the Jewish Homeland.”
He warned the gathering against a concentrated population in Palestine.
“The present growing concentration of Jewish population in the new cities in Palestine, Haifa, Jerusalem, cannot go on indefinitely. Either through the natural course of economic reaction, or what would be far more desirable, through a controlled and regulated distribution of immigration, there will be again a large scale trend back to the soil.
“For that trend, it is necessary to provide new land reserves which should be capable of absorbing the influx. The only kind of land reserve, regarding which we can feel sure that it will not pass out of Jewish hands, are land reserves which are nationally owned by the Jewish people,” Dr. Goldstein declared.
Mr. Perlman deplored the condition of European Jewry. “The doors of most countries are shut; especially to the Jews,” he pointed out. “Palestine is our only real hope.”
Other speakers included Dr. Samuel Margoshes, editor of the Day, and Mordecai Rudinsky, secretary of the Jewish National Fund.
At the termination of the afternoon conference Mr. Perlman was elected chairman of the Council and H. W. Carmely was named secretary. Six vice-presidents will be chosen at the first meeting of the executive committee at which all participating organizations will be represented.
DEATH OF ROTHSCHILD TO BE COMMEMORATED
A nation-wide movement to commemorate the death of the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild, philanthropist and father of Jewish colonization in Palestine, will start today at the expiration of the “sheloshim,” traditional thirty-day period of mourning, under the auspices of the Jewish National Fund and the Zionist Organization of America.
The first of these assemblies will be held Wednesday evening at the Hotel Astor. Among those to speak then are Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Federal Judge Julian W. Mack, Louis Lipsky, Rabbi Wolf Gold, Mrs. Edward Jacobs, Joseph Kramer and Chaim Greenberg. Dr. Israel Goldstein will preside and memorial prayers will be chanted by Cantor David Roitman.
Similar meetings will be held at Baltimore, Md.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Portland, Ore.; Sioux City, Iowa; New Britain, Conn.; and Warren and Wilkesbarre, Pa.
