Argument will be heard tomorrow in the courts on the question of the jurisdiction of the Jewish Community Council. Evidence was taken in the case for three days prior to September 28 when the matter was adjourned.
The Jewish Community Council had applied for an injunction restraining Isomor Brenner from slaughtering kosher meat. The petition was based on the claim that the Council, together with the Montreal Council of Orthodox Rabbis, alone has the power to authorize slaughterers.
S. W. Jacobs, M. P., and Rabbis H. Cohen, H. Abramowitz and Julius Berger were among the witnesses for the Council.
The defendant claimed that the Council had no authority over him, civil or religious, and could not interfere with his slaughtering business. The petitioners claimed that it was necessary that the slaughter of kosher meat be under the jurisdiction of the organized community.
Among the witnesses for the defendant were several schochtim (slaughterers). This is held to indicate that they, affiliated with the Community Council, are interested in breaking it and returning to conditions that prevailed before organization of the Council.
