Lt. Gen. Sir Frank Simpson, president of the British military war crimes court trying Nazi Field Marshal Fritz Erich von Mannstein, today asked British mothers to remove their children from the courtroom so they would not hear “terrible things” about the mass extermination of Jews.
The court, which is hearing a 17-point indictment including responsibility for mass pogroms in the Ukraine during the war, denied a defense motion that persons who compiled documents for the prosecution be called for cross-examination by the defense. The defense motion was raised on the grounds that counsel for von Mannstein had been given no opportunity to examine Polish witnesses whose evidence had been given in the form of a deposition in Poland.
