Creates Chair at Jewish Institute of Religion for Non-jewish Professors

A new departure in the field of inter-religious unity has been made by the Jewish Institute of Religion with the announcement made yesterday by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, acting president, that a chair has been created at the Institute by Joseph Stroock of New York to bear the name of his late wife, Hilda Stich Stroock.

For a number of years, the Institute has invited distinguished teachers who are not of the Jewish faith to lecture before it on themes which come within the purview of a training school for the ministry. These men have been only from American or English schools.

With the establishment of the Hilda Stich Stroock Foundation, the Jewish Institute of Religion will, in addition to inviting American and English scholars, begin the practice of inviting some of the leading scholars in the field of Bible study, comparative religion, ancient and medieval history, in order that the students of the Institute may have the point of view of non-Jews, who are pre-eminent scholars, on the problems that face students of religion.

The first scholar to be invited under the terms of the new Foundation, according to Dr. Wise, is Professor Hugo Gressman, Professor of Old Testament Theology in Berlin University, and Rektor of the Institutum Judaicum, in succession to the late Herman Strack.

The second non-Jewish lecturer for 1927-28, under the terms of the Stroock Foundation, has been announced as Dr. George Foote Moore, Frothingham Professor of History of Religion in Harvard University.
