Rev. Francis Gross will go on trial here next week on charges of criminal libel in connection with a pamphlet allegedly issued by him attacking Samuel Untermyer.
Gross, who was indicted for criminal libel by the Hudson County grand jury, is free on bail of $2,500 set by County Judge Robert V. Kinkaid yesterday when he was arraigned on the charge.
Published statements that Gross was an unfrocked priest were denied today by his attorney, A. Leszczynski, who declared that Gross did not now have a parish because he suffered from rheumatism. Gross, who lives in Perth Amboy, recently circulated through the mails a leaflet urging support of Hitler and denouncing the Jews.
Conviction for criminal libel in this state carries a penalty of two years imprisonment or a $500 fine, or both.
