Columbia Pictures and its owners. the Cohen brothers, are all agog over “No Greater Glory,” a picturization of Ferene Molnar’s novel “Paul Street Boys.” which was published in translation in this country about five years ago It was a sensitively written story of a group of boys in Budapist and told how through the martial spirit inspired in them by a teacher, they fight a war among themselves that results in the death of one of the youngsters The picture will not be shown in new York until May 4, when it will open at the Roxy, but from advance reports I understand it is an interesting experiment in cinema productions. The screen play written by Jo Swerling has followed faithfully the incidents and sequences of Molnar’s novel. The leading player is little eleven year old George Breakstone and he is supported in the juvenile roles by Jackie Searl and Jimmy Butler.

BEGGARS IN ERMINE

At the ,Mayfair this week a unique idea in pictures is being shown, It is called “Beggars in Ermine” and in a left-handed way shows how the down-and-outers live in this not too sympathetic world, The plot is implausible, concerning John Dawson, once a steal magnate, who, having been injured and having turned his business over to his wife, finds himself shunted out in the cold, He meets another beggar played by Henry Walthall and together they organize all beggars in a world-wide fraternal organization. Dawson shows them how to compete in a capitalistic society and within a few years they are quite prosperous. For a moment the audience thinks that a film company has suddenly decided really to expose the frauds taken as a matter of course in big-business, but at the final curtain al is well with the stockholders.

HITLER PICTURE SET FOR MONDAY

“Hitler’s Reign of Terror” will open at the Mayfair Theatre on Monday. It was with some relief that Samuel Cummins, head of the Jewel productions made this announcement. According to that gentleman. the picture was originally set for last week but the New York state Board of Censors, after twice viewing the film refused to give it a clean bill of health although they did not actually turn it down. Under a New York law it may be shown as “news” rather than as a special feature and in that shape it will be presented at the Mayfair. Edwin C. Hill, radio news commentator, has supplied the comments, Some of the picture, it is said, was taken by Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. while in Germany.

OTHER SCREEN NOTES

Tomorrow night at 7:30 and again at 9:45 at the New School for social Research there will be special showings of Pavlov’s “Mechanics of the Brain.”…”She Made Her Bed” will be the feature picture at the Rialto for the coming week….Vera Caspary, novelist and playwright, has been signed by Columbia Pictures for whom she will write scenarios….At the Paramounts, both New York and Brooklyn the picture will be “The Witching Hour” with a mixed American and English cast….A note from Germany says that the people in that unhappy country Nazi propaganda to the contrary. are interested in American pictures. Those that are allowed through the censorship bars are well attended. Garbo, Dressier and Beery are the big favorites. Incidentally each of these stars works for a Jewish company??? “Big Hearted Herbert.” which is still playing on Broadway, will be made into a picture with Aline Mac Mahon and Guy Kibbee acting the leads.

I hope I am not overdoing this idea of reprinting baldly some of the notices sent to me y cinema concern. The following were a late batch across the top of which ran this legend, “Would you be interested to know that”

Mae West recently received three votes for road commissioner t Burlington, Vermont?

Sylvia Sidney wears eighteen gowns in “Thirty day Prisoners?” Johnny Weissmuller can squeeze a grapefruit to a pulp by the pressure of one hand and has often torn telephone books in half?

Heather Angel is a crack rifle shot and seldom visits a beach resort without taking a fling at the targets?

Norman Foster owns a police dog that is a grand-daughter of “Strong heart?

Polly Moran lost so much weight dieting, the prop men had to pad her clothes for re-takes on ???Hollywood Party??? so the camera shots would match?
