A crowd of more than 10,000 persons jammed into Wembley Stadium here yesterday to welcome Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan, Chief of Staff of Israel’s Army of Defense, who is currently visiting South Africa. Representatives of major community and Zionist organizations and Johannesburg Mayor Max Goodman welcomed the Israeli hero.
In an address to the huge Crowd, Gen. Dayan reviewed Israel’s current military and political situation and said that although Israel was surrounded by Arab states pledged to its total destruction the Israeli people was unafraid and confident of its ability to defend itself. He spoke glowingly of the support given Israel by Jewish communities abroad and said that this aid had given the Israelis the feeling that they were net alone.
