Cuba’s dwindling Jewish community of 600 Jews have received Passover goods for their seder observance this year, according to Rabbi Joseph Karasick, chairman, American Section of the World Jewish Congress. The WJC’s affiliate, the Canadian Jewish Congress, has shipped for the 11th year Passover goods, matzo, matzo meal; wine, oil, meat, tea, and horseradish to help Cuban Jews observe Passover.

Rabbi Karasick noted that mostly older Jews remain in Havana and 26 Cuban cities, the remnant of 15,000 Jews. He stressed that “like the rest of Latin America, the demise cannot be blamed on anti-Semitism, but on economic and political revolution.” The Orthodox Jewish leader noted that Castro’s record of permitting “religious freedom and repatriation to Israel was good.”
