A curfew was imposed on Nablus today after security forces used tear gas to disperse rioting students in the main square of the town. The occasion was a general strike that closed down businesses and schools on the 29th anniversary of the founding of Israel according to the Gregorian calendar.

There were partial school strikes in Ramallah and at the Balata refugee camp near Nablus. But the West Bank as a whole was more peaceful than it was on this date a year ago. Security forces remained alert for possible trouble tomorrow which is the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of a Nablus schoolgirl by an Israeli soldier during student demonstrations in May, 1976.
