The 11,000 detained Jews on the island of Cyprus completed a 24-hour hunger strike over the week-end in protest against the fatal shooting of Shlomo Chaimson, one of the refugees, Reuters reported from Nicosia today.
According to the dispatch, Chaimson was killed by a camp guard after a group of refugees made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the Caraolos detention camp. A statement issued by the “Palestine Refugees Organization” said that the detainee was shot after he ignored a sentry’s challenge.
An inquiry into the shooting is expected to begin within a few days. Chaimson was buried in the Jewish cemetery near the village of Margo.
