Czech Court Trying Theresienstadt Commander Hears 33,000 Jews Died from Ills in Ghetto

Thirty-three thousand Jews died at Theresienstadt from illness brought on by mistreatment and lack of food, Dr. M.R. Stein, former head of the health department in the ghetto city, testified today at the war crimes trial of Karl Rahm, former Nazi commandant of Theresienstadt. Dr. Stein said that 1,200 tuberculars were deported to death camps in one transport.

Vaclav Nosek, Czechoslovak Minister of the Interior, who also testified said that Rahm, despite his denials, was aware that the Jews deported from Theresienstadt were murdred. Another witness told of seeing Jews strangled with towels in the ghetto.
