In an attempt to incite the population against the Czechoslovak Government and the country’s Jewish residents, Slovak fascists are spreading a rumor that 40,000 Hungarian Jews are to settle in Czechoslovakia under the terms of the Hungarian-Slovak population exchange agreement.
Minister of Settlement Affairs J.H. Okaly, in a statement branding the rumors as completely without foundation, said today that although he was dealing “benevolently” with applications by Jews, up to now only 180 Hungarian Jews have asked to be allowed to settle in Slovakia under the exchange agreement. The exchange of Slovaks for Hungarians was arranged to do away with the presence of a Hungarian minority in Czechoslovakia and a Slovak minority in Hungary.
UNRRA authorities here announced today that they have begun registering for immigration Jews and half-Jews who are considered Germans by the Czech authorities and are, therefore, obliged to move to Germany or settle elsewhere. UNRRA is seeking to obtain permission for them to take along most of their movable property, a privilege denied repatriated Germans.
