Mordecai Oren, former member of Mapam, Israel’s left-wing Socialist party, who has been under arrest in Czechoslovakia since late last year, has now been accused of being “in contact with a dangerous Trotzkyite” and of working in an underground movement against the Czechoslovak Government, it was reported here today by the Yiddish newspaper, “Neue Zeitung.”
The newspaper identifies the “dangerous Trotzkyite” as the late famed Jewish Czech writer Egon Kisch who died in Prague two years ago.
Oren disappeared late in 1951 after a trip to East Berlin to attend a peace conference as a member of an Israeli delegation. His whereabouts remained a secret and were the subject of numerous inquiries by the Israel Government. It was only after the exchange of several notes between Tel Aviv and Prague that it was revealed by the Czechs that Oren had been arrested for “anti-state activities.”
