Open charges against the Daughters of the American Revolution for operating espionage and black list with secret sources of information were stated by Helen Tufts Bailie of Anne Adams Tufts Chapter in a letter called “Our Threatened Heritage,” made public by the D. A. R. Committee of Protest which includes some of the most prominent names, among them Mrs. Wm. F. Anderson, Paul Revere Chapter; Mrs. Elaine Goodale Eastman, Betty Allen Chapter; Miss Anna Dill Gamble, Member-at-large; Mrs. Daniel Howard, Abigail Wolcot Ellsworth Chapter; Mrs. D. P. Linedinst, Irondequoit Chapter; Mrs. William D. Macrae, Mercy Warren Chapter; Mrs. George L. Murin, Submit Clark Chapter; Mrs. Jean Maury Coule Patten, Thirteen Colonies Chapter; Mrs. Dallas Lore Sharp, Old Colony Chapter, Mrs. Walter A. Peck, Gaspee Chapter, Mrs. John E. Pember, Anne Adams-Tufts Chapter; Mrs. William Lyon Phelps, Eve Lear Chapter; Mrs. E. Talmadge Root, Anne Adams-Tufts Chapter; Mrs. A. B. Tripp, Parson Roby Chapter, Mrs. Hendrik Vossema, Bunker Hill Chapter.

Prominent American Jews, important Jewish organizations and the Jewish problem figure conspicuously in the revelations made public by Mrs. Bailie. Mrs. Tufts Bailie assails the leadership of the D. A. R. and calls the whole incident humiliating. The D. A. R. has circulated a pamphlet called “The Common Enemy.”

This pamphlet, Mrs. Tufts Bailie declared, claims to unmask a world conspiracy in which the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” long since exposed as forgeries, are prominently figured as the underlying motives in a so-called “Jewish conspiracy.”

Mrs. Tufts characterizes the Black List as un-American. In letters she made public Government officials denied that Fred R. Marvin, said to be the author of “The Common Enemy,” had any connections with the United States Government.

“Our officers are not really our pilots,” says Mrs. Tufts at the conclusion of her letter in assailing severely the leaders of the D. A. R. Continuing she says, “our course at the present time is towards the rocks. the fact that the stars and stripes are flowing at the mast head will not help us. Only by changing our course and endorsing the ship to wiser polots shall we avert shipwreck.”

GERMAN AMERICANS VOICE OBJECTIONS TO ‘DAWN’FILM

Charles A. Oberwager, president of the United German Societies of New York, prepared to carry his fight against showing of the film “Dawn,” depicting the killing of Edith Cavell, to the Supreme Court.

He said he would ask an injunction against the film on the same grounds that injunctions were issued against the playing of Wagner’s music shortly before the United States entered the war–that it might incite riots.

Mr. Oberwager’s decision was reached following the licensing of the film yesterday by Director James Wingate of the Division of Motion Pictures of the Department of Education.

The license was issued over the protest of Mr. Oberwager and other representatives of German societies, and after argument in favor of the film by Anne Morgan, Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt Sr. and Mrs. S. M. Perkins, representing the Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Mr. Oberwager told Mr. Wingate that showing of the film would inflict pain on 800,000 New Yorkers of German descent and millions of Americans of German descent throughout the country. Mr. Wingate replied that the law did not extend to him authority to prohibit the showing of films on that score.
