Hillel Rogoff, who writes in the “Forward (Dec. 11) on the registration-of-aliens bill while has been introduced in Congress, believes that the new move on the part of the anti-immigrationist is directed primarily against organized labor ## this country, and therefore the A. F. of L. while helped to create the sentiment against immigrants will now be forced to come out in their defense.

“Through this bill the aliens would suffer only temporarily, until they acquired citizenship papers. But the unions would be crippled forever”, says Mr. Rogoff.

“The campaign against immigrants which was undertaken supposedly in the interests of labor, now being converted into a weapon of the capitalists against the workers. The passing of the registration-of-aliens bill will be the first step this direction. Immigrant workers will not dare to be active in their unions if they will know that they are under the constant vigilance of the police and the bosses will be in a position always threaten their employes with persecution and d## portation.

“The unions realize this and they will no doubt fight this bill. But if they had understood the situation before, if they had regarded the immigration problem from a broader social-economic point of view and had refused to participate in the campaign of slander against the immigrants they would, most likely, not be faced now with this present danger.”

ECONOMICS NOT-SENTIMENTALITY

The renewed efforts being made in Spain induce the Sephardic Jews to immigrate in large numbers into that country are discussed by the “Daily Jewish Courier” of Chicago, in a recent issue.

“It is doubtful”, says this paper, “whether the friendly invitation to the Jews is really dictated by feelings of remorse for the great wrong Spain did the Jews in 1492. We do not mean to imp## that Spain intends to harm the Jews, but she has her own good in mind. Spain is backward industrially as compared with other European countries and no doubt it is felt in many circles that the influx of an energetic Jewish element would help greatly to improve the situation.

“It must be assumed that if the Jews have hitherto not made use of Spain’s invitation th## does not show that they still nurture a hatred against spain for the merciless manner in which she treated them in the past. If opportunities for earning a livelihood in Spain were more favorable the Jews would certainly flock there. The obstacle is not a sentimental one but a purely economic one.”

MUTUAL CONFIDENCE REPLACING DISTRUST

The “Neuer Haint” of Warsaw, carries an article in a recent issue by Dr. I. Gotlieb, who dwells a{SPAN}##{/SPAN} length on the Palestine Investment Corporation which was organized recently in New York. Dr. Gotlieb sees in this a sign that the feeling of distrust which always existed between the Zionist and non-Zionists has finally given way to mutuals confidence. He says:

“The declaration which was made by Louis Marshall before the American Jewish Committee in reference to the participation of the non-Zionists in the Jewish Agency and the establishment of the Palestine Investment Corporation prove## that there really exists among the American Jews a sincere desire to cooperate in the reconstruction of Palestine.”
