The development in Palestine of standards of beauty in architecture and town construction and of esthetic living as distinct from Ghetto standards is advocated in an article in the “New Palestine” of Jan. 15, by Morris’ Rothenberg, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Keren Hayesod in America.

“It is essential,” Mr. Rothenberg writes, “that a deliberate, a determined effort be made to resist the importation of Ghetto standards into Palestine and to establish orderliness, an appreciation for beauty of appearance in the life of both the cities and the colonies.

“I do not, of course, mean to convey the impression, that the present appearance of the cities and colonies in Palestine is unlovely. Considering the conditions under which the pioneers have had to work, the results from the point of view of appearance, are not to be found fault with, and they are incomparably superior to the native, oriental life.

“But there are evidences of encroaching ugliness-an indifference to structural style, a tendency towards congestion, a lack of appreciation for landscaping, for gardening, for general neatness of appearance, though there are a number of charming spots to be seen.

“What I plead for is the laying of proper emphasis upon artistic standards, upon the cultivation of a desire for beauty of environment among the general population, upon the establishment of more than the Jewish National Home–a beautiful National Home.”
