Recurring again to the subject of the stranded refugees in the European ports which is occupying much space in the Yiddish press, the Day, of Oct. 24, says that an effort must be made to settle the refugees in Palestine.
“The question as to who is to be blamed for Canada’s decision to bar further immigration of refugees to her shores does not interest the refugees. Whether the trouble was caused by the Ica or by the Jews of the U.S. or by the Government of Canada does not help to alleviate the situation. The refugees ask: What shall we do now?
“The only ones who can give an answer to this question are the Ica and the other organizations that assumed the responsibility for the refugees when the agreement with Canada was made.
“Canada has locked her doors to the refugees. Where can they go? There is at present only one hope for the Jews and that is, Palestine. The Jews have a right to demand that Palestine be kept wide open for the unfortunate refugees.
“Undoubtedly the Palestine Government will not shut the refugees out, even though her colonization policy is opposed to this. There are times when programs and policies of state must be ignored to make room for ordinary humanity.
“The refugees must be taken to Palestine and settled there. The Jews of America must help to carry this through. It was partly the passive attitude of American Jewry that caused the closing of Canada’s doors to that caused the closing of Canda’s doors to the refugees. Now is the time for them to do their bounden duty.”
