The Day of Oct. 26 carried the following editorial comment on a cable which appeared in the N. Y. Times the previous day.

“The New York Times has received by cable, from her special correspondent in Mexico City, a most remarkable piece of news to the effect that a group of “Jewish colonists” from various countries of Europe have been brought over to Mexico by a ‘Hebrew congregation of New York.’ It is somewhat puzzling why the N. Y. Times considered this news so important as to have it cabled. Still more puzzling is the reference to the ‘Hebrew congregation’, about which no particulars are given. It would certainly be very interesting to know more about this unusual congregation.

“But the cable contains further valuable news. It states that the Jews of New York are sending to Mexico a number of Jewish immigrants who have been detained at Ellis Island. These immigrants are to remain in Mexico until such time as they will be able to enter the United States.

“One dislikes to suspect a tendency in this. There are bitter enemies of immigration who are endeavoring to create sentiment among the public against the immigrants. There is no doubt a purpose in the rumors that are being broadcasted almost daily now telling about immigrants who are arrested and brought to Ellis Island in chains, etc. These stories are spread in order to prepare us for the registration-of-aliens law’, which Secretary Davis is going to ask the coming Congress to adopt.

“The anti-immigrationists know how to create sentiment. But we are somewhat amazed at the attitude of the Times in this connection.”

DEMANDS A MORE CANDID STATEMENT FROM ICA

Mr. Jacob Fishman, writes in the Jewish Morning Journal of today anent Ica’s statement issued Monday in regard to the reason for Canada’s cancellation of her agreement to admit the refugees.

“If it were true,” says Mr. Fishman, “that Canada’s decision was due merely to Ica’s having fulfilled her obligation, the Canadian Government would have been more explicit in her statement on the subject and would not have advised: ‘Ask the Ica, she knows the reasons.’

“We are informed that corruption was practiced by certain individuals connected with the Ica and that this scandalous fact was the cause of Canada’s action. While we are not certain if this is true, we feel that the light of exposure should be thrown on the subject by a candid and truthful statement of the facts from the Ica in order to avoid, in future, scandals of this sort, if they really occurred.”

THE EXPANSION OF THE JEWISH SEMINARY LIBRARY

In the Jewish Morning Journal of Oct. 28, Mr. Peter Wiernick remarks:

“The Jews of New York can justly be proud at the large sum of money collected last Sunday for the new building which will be an addition to the present Jewish Seminary library, and which will make it possible to open the library to the public.

“We hope this is only a beginning in this direction. New York Jewry needs more Jewish libraries.
