Daniel Harris, last survivor of 3,000 Jewish war veterans of the Civil War, died here yesterday in his 100th year. He was one of the last living persons to have met president Lincoln. Memorial services for him will be held on Monday by the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, of which he was honorary commander.
Harris was born in London, England, in 1846. At the ago of seventeen, he enlisted in the Union forces as a sailor. Giving his name as George Irving, and his age as twenty-one, he served on the sloop-of-war Saratoga, which was part of the fleet blockading Georgia. He was one of several landing parties landed in Georgia to come to the aid of General William T. Sherman.
