A Danish court of appeals yesterday commuted a death sentence imposed on Dr. Werner Best, Nazi gauleiter of Denmark during the German occupation. It reduced the sentence to five years imprisonment.
Dr. Best was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Danish Jews to Nazi concentration camps where many of them died later. The former Reich High Commissioner for Denmark from 1942 to the fall of the Nazi empire, was sentenced to death last October.
