A special court today sentenced Paul Berman, editor of the Danziger Echo, Jewish weekly, to four months in prison for publishing two anti-Nazi articles. The court, acceding to the demand of the Free City’s prosecutor, ordered immediate Berman’s commitment, but released him pending an appeal following intervention by Dr. Casimir Papee, Polish High Commissioner for Danzig.
Evidence submitted against Berman by the prosecutor consisted of two reports carried in the Echo.
The first quotes the Nazi song “We Fight Against Jewry when the Fuehrer Commands,” and comments that Hitler’s command is the
highest law for mass murder of half a million Jews.
The second article, reporting on the Swedish Government’s conferment of a professorship on Dr. Marcus Ehrenpreis, leading rabbi in Sweden and a noted Zionist, added that Nazi Air Minister Herman Goering, by contrast, had just received another diploma from a lunatic asylum, which fact it is forbidden to mention in the Third Reich.
