The Jewish daily Moment reported today that the Danzig authorities had postponed the expulsion of Jews until Jan. 1, 1940. Previously, Polish Jews had been ordered to leave by the end of this year and other Jews by next April 1. Under orders to leave by New Year, Jews of Polish nationality had been selling their property at ridiculously low prices. The first group of 40 Jewish families from the Free City arrived in Warsaw yesterday and other groups arrived in other Polish cities.
A delegation of Polish Jews was to call on the Polish High Commissioner in Danzig today, according to newspaper reports, to ask for intervention with the Free City Senate against the expulsion order, which was stated to spell ruin for 1,500 Polish Jews. The acting president of the Danzig Jewish Community, it was learned, flew to Paris to ask Jewish organizations for assistance in carrying out the Senate’s plan of Jewish emigration by April 1.
