David Hacohen, Mapai deputy in the Knesset and a member of the Israel delegation to the United Nations delegation, was recalled today to Jerusalem to “explain” to the Foreign Ministry a statement he made at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union conference in London that Israel must not place too much reliance on French friendship. Mr. Hacohen headed the Israel Knesset representation at the IPU conference.
The Labor daily Davar reported today that Mr. Hacohen, a former Minister to Burma, would not serve on the UN delegation. It claimed that Mr. Hacohen had offered his resignation from the delegation in view of the storm kicked up in Israel by his remarks. As late as yesterday, the Foreign Ministry insisted that Mr. Hacohen was still a member of the delegation.
(In London today, Mr. Hacohen denied that he had been recalled to Israel. He said he had already decided to return for a number of reasons. The deputy stated he had asked that he not be included on this year’s UN delegation, but that he had, nevertheless, been chosen.)
