Representatives of major American Jewish organizations, as well as Jewish writers and editors, today honored David Markus, editor of the Jewish newspaper “Yiddishe Presse” of Rio de Janeiro, at a reception tendered him by HIAS. Mr. Markus is now visiting the United States en route to Israel.
Dr. Arthur Jacobs, executive director of HIAS, introduced Mr. Markus, emphasizing his role in Brazil as a cultural leader and a person active in various fields of Jewish life. Other speaker included Dr. Isaac Schwarzbart of the World Jewish Congress; Jacob Pat of the Jewish Labor Committee: Mordecai Strigler, noted Jewish novelist; Dr. Chaim Shoshkes, HIAS overseas representative, and others.
