David K. Niles, who served in the White House for 15 years, today announced his resignation as administrative assistant to President Truman and said that he is anxious to visit the State of Israel as a private citizen. The resignation, effective May 31, was due to the fact that Mr. Niles is “physically very tired.”
Mr. Niles served as White House specialist on minority problems and advised the President on matters pertaining to Jews and other minorities. In accepting the resignation, President Truman told Mr. Niles in a letter: “You have been a tower of strength to me during the past six years and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. I regret very much that conditions are such that you feel you must have a free lay-off–that is the only reason in the world why I am accepting your resignation.”
