Dawes Asks Greatest Assembly of Jews for Chicago Progress Fair

“We extend a hearty welcome to you all,” is the opening sentence of a letter addressed to “The Jews of America” by President Rufus C. Dawes of the Century of Progress. The letter is an invitation to American Jewry to participate here in the observance of Jewish Day and to join in the Jewish Day celebration on July 3.

Mr. Dawes’ letter says: “We have followed with keen interest the plans and preparations being made for Jewish Day at the Century of Progress on July 3. We have been informed that your leaders expect to have assembled here the largest group of Jewish peoples ever gathered together in one spot.

“We look forward with pride and enthusiasm to the showing of ‘The Romance of a People’, the extraordinary record of achievement of your race in America. It will be a notable contribution to Chicago’s International Exposition.”

The complete list of officers of the Chicago Committee for Jewish Day at the Century of Progress was announced, with Judge Harry M. Fisher acting as general chairman. Associate chairmen will be James H. Becker, Jacob M. Braude, Miss Pearl Franklin, Rabbi Solomon Goldman, Dr. Gerson B. Levi, Dr. S. Lorber, B. Kotzin and Elkan Voorsanger.

Honorary vice-chairmen are Judge Samuel Alschuler, Mrs. Harry Berkman, Mrs. Benjamin Davis, James Davis, Miss Julia I. Felsenthal, B. Horwich, Sol Kline, Morris Seskind, Max Shulman, Rabbi Saul Silber, Mrs. Julius Stone and Mrs. Gerson B. Levi. Melvin L. Straus is treasurer and Meyer W. Weisgal, executive director.
